Microsoft Unveils Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch with Snapdragon X2 Plus: Price, Specs and Release Date

Microsoft has announced the second-generation Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch, now powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon X2 Plus, alongside a new Surface Mouse with haptic feedback. Revealed at Qualcomm's Snapdragon Summit on September 23, the devices keep last year's thin, fanless designs but promise faster graphics, much quicker on-device AI and longer battery life. Both arrive on October 13, with prices starting at $1,149.99 and $1,199. Here's everything announced, and which one makes sense for you.

Snapdragon X2 Plus: what's actually faster

The headline change is inside. Both devices move from the first-generation Snapdragon X Plus to the new Snapdragon X2 Plus, and Microsoft says its Surface engineers worked with Qualcomm while the chip was still being developed to tune it for thin, fanless PCs. Compared with the first-edition models, Microsoft claims:

Up to 17% faster performance in Office productivity workloads.
More than 60% faster graphics.
Up to 95% faster local AI processing on the NPU.
Up to 18% more efficient battery performance.

These are Microsoft's own benchmark results (UL Procyon and 3DMark Steel Nomad Lite), so real-world gains will vary. The bigger practical point is that more Copilot and Windows AI features can now run on the device itself rather than in the cloud, which Microsoft says means lower latency and more privacy.

The Surface Pro 12-inch remains Microsoft's most portable Surface: a thin, fanless tablet that becomes a laptop when you attach the Surface Pro 12-inch Keyboard, with a Surface Slim Pen that stores magnetically on the back. Note that the keyboard and pen are still sold separately.

Beyond the new chip, the display is 25% brighter at 500 nits, there's a new Black color option, and Microsoft says the Pro now gets an extra hour of web browsing on a charge. It starts at $1,149.99.

New: Microsoft Ink Canvas

The Pro also debuts Microsoft Ink Canvas, a pen-first app where you can sketch, annotate, generate images and summarize text directly on the page. The idea is that your handwriting and drawings give Copilot more context than a typed prompt, so a rough idea can turn into something useful faster.

Ink Canvas comes pre-installed on the new Pro and will be available from the Microsoft Store on other supported Surface and Windows devices from October 13. It needs touch support, and the AI features require a Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium or Pro subscription, with usage limits.

Surface Laptop 13-inch (2nd Edition)

The Surface Laptop 13-inch is the traditional clamshell option: a fanless aluminum laptop with a full-size backlit keyboard, a precision touchpad and a taller 3:2 PixelSense touchscreen. Like the Pro, its display is now 25% brighter at 500 nits, and it adds a Black color option.

Battery life is the standout. Microsoft rates it at up to 22.5 hours of local video playback, which should comfortably cover a full working day plus the commute. It starts at $1,199.

The new Surface Mouse builds haptic feedback into the mouse itself, giving you a small physical pulse when something happens on screen, such as a window snapping into place or an object lining up. Microsoft describes the effect as subtle but hard to give up once you're used to it.

It has an ambidextrous shape, a customizable action button that can launch Copilot or other shortcuts (set up through the Surface app on Windows), and Bluetooth 6.0 for switching between multiple devices. It's made with 30% recycled content and costs $79.99 in Black or Platinum.

For business: optional 5G and chip-to-cloud security

All three products will also be sold through Surface for Business from October 13. The biggest business addition is an optional 5G version of the Surface Pro 12-inch, something the first edition lacked, so mobile staff can stay online without public Wi-Fi.

Security features include Secured-core PC protections, Microsoft Pluton with TPM 2.0, and Surface UEFI built on the open-source Project Mu. IT teams also get Microsoft's Surface Management Portal, Support Portal, IT Toolkit and Repair Tool for managing devices across their lifecycle.

Those prices are a significant step up. The first-generation Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch launched in May 2025 at $799 and $899, so the new models start roughly $300 to $350 higher. Microsoft hasn't yet detailed the memory and storage in each base configuration, so it's worth checking exactly what you get once listings go live. For context, the larger 13-inch Surface Pro with Snapdragon X2 launched earlier this year at $1,499, so the 12-inch model is still the cheaper way into the Surface Pro range.

Surface Pro 12-inch or Surface Laptop 13-inch: which should you buy?

Choose the Surface Pro 12-inch if you want a tablet that becomes a laptop, you take handwritten notes or sketch, or you're interested in Ink Canvas. Remember to budget extra for the keyboard and Slim Pen, which can push the real price well above the laptop.

Choose the Surface Laptop 13-inch if you mainly type, want a keyboard and touchpad that are always attached, and value the longest possible battery life. For most students and office workers, it's the simpler and better-value choice.

Both run Windows on Arm. Most everyday apps now run natively or through emulation, but if you rely on specialist software, older drivers or certain anti-cheat games, check compatibility first.

On paper, this is a solid second generation. The designs were already among the most portable Windows PCs you can buy, and Snapdragon X2 Plus addresses the first edition's main weakness: graphics and AI headroom. The brighter 500-nit displays fix another common complaint, and 5G on the Pro is a welcome return for business users.

The concern is price. At $300 to $350 more than the models they replace, the 12-inch Pro and 13-inch Laptop are no longer the budget entry points they were in 2025. We'll want to see the base configurations, and how well that 22.5-hour battery claim holds up in real testing, before recommending them over discounted first-edition models or the larger Surface Pro and Laptop.
